No One Killed The Electric Car
It just moved a few miles up north, to the Silicon Valley. Electric car sales are alive and well and taking new exciting forms, under the guidance of technology-oriented new car companies.
The latest generation of full electric cars combines software and electronics to achieve superior performance. One thing many of them have in common is sports car styling and they’re fast, very fast. Check out some of the electric hotties we found:
Wrightspeed X1 prototype – This speed machine can go from 0 to 60 in 3 seconds and fly through the quarter mile in 11.5 seconds. The car is still in the works, but should be ready for the road in a couple of years, with a price tag close to $100,000.
Fetish – Assembled by hand in Monaco and made to order by a company called Venturi, the electric car is ready for sale and priced at $600,000. The two-seat roadster can go from 0 to 60 in 4.5 seconds, powered by 58 Kw/h lithium ion batteries with a 220-mile range on a full charge.
Tesla – With a top speed of 130 mph, the Tesla Roadster promises a full charge range of 250 miles and enough power to go from 0 to 60 in 4 seconds. Priced around $100,000, this electric vehicle is made for lovers of speed, who just happen to care about the environment as well.
Equally innovative but a little less pompous, other electric cars shoot for efficiency and practicality instead of looks.
Tango – This narrow two-seater – one seat behind the other instead of side-by-side – accelerates from 0 to 60 in 4 seconds, reaches a top speed of 150 mph and is emission-free. However, its greatest asset is the versatility and ease of handling. Only 39 inches wide, the Tango can get through traffic like a motorcycle, doubles the lane space and can be parked perpendicular to the curb.
Xebra – ZAP, the acronym stands for Zero Air Pollution, very fitting for a company committed to creating fuel-efficient transportation technologies. Their new electric car is called the Xebra, a 4-passenger, 3-wheel tiny vehicle priced under $10,000. The company says it’s the only 100% electric vehicle that can reach up to 40 mph, that is currently in production and available in the United States.
Tomberlin – This Georgia company is working on 3 models: the 2-passenger Emerge E-2, the 4-passenger Emerge E-4 and the Anvil, which also fits 4. The most remarkable characteristic of Tomberlin’s products is that they’re very affordable, between $5,000 and $8,000.
