Buyers Affirm They Own More Vehicles, But Fill Them Less Often

October 8, 2007

An exclusive survey conducted by BuyingAdvice.com, an online resource for new car buyers, shows that there is an increase in the number of vehicles per household and that it’s rare for owners to fill every seat in their vehicle.

This recent survey of 2,400 new car buyers helps confirm that America’s number of vehicles is growing, but is predominantly under-used.

Most recent statistics from The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration show that there are now 245 million vehicles owned in the U.S. This number of vehicles has more than doubled since 1977. While it was typical to own one car per family a generation or so ago, the more recent trend is an increase in the number of cars per household.

BuyingAdvice.com’s survey reveals over 43 percent of survey respondents have 2 cars in their household. And almost 30 percent of those surveyed said they have 3 or more vehicles. David Green, an analyst with J.D. Power and Associates explains that people are buying new vehicles to fit “their needs and lifestyles”—for instance buying vehicles for practicality or fuel economy.

BuyingAdvice’s new survey also revealed that over 54 percent of those polled have a vehicle that hold 5 or more passengers. However, over 75 percent of those surveyed disclosed that they seldom if ever feel every seat in their car. This supports FHWA data that puts the average vehicle trip at 1.75 passengers at a time.
