March 17, 2008

In response to a new online survey conducted by automotive consumer web site BuyingAdvice.com, over half of new car buyers said they believed that today’s vehicles had more long-term durability than their predecessors.

Fifty-three percent of the sample, taken from thousands of monthly users of the site’s online price quote service, said they felt long-term durability had improved. On the flip-side, 25 percent detected no difference in longevity and 22 percent said durability had declined.

Toyota and Honda topped the list of most reliable vehicles in buyers’ eyes, with 39 percent of respondents choosing Toyota and 29 percent Honda. Ford was the domestic of choice with 12 percent, while luxury brands were less popular in terms of buyer perception of dependability. BMW was the luxury brand of choice with 11 percent and Lexus, Toyota’s luxury division, managing only 9 percent.

Sixty-one percent of those questioned said that they expected to own their next vehicle over five years, 32 percent said they expected to own their car for between three and five years while only 7 percent said they were likely to change vehicles in under 3 years.

When asked to predict the total lifespan of their vehicle, 57 percent said that they expected their car to be on the road for over 10 years. Twenty four percent of respondents said they expected a vehicle to last at least 5 years while a further 18 percent predicted a lifetime of over 7 years.
