Save Money by Buying a Car During the Holidays

Did you know that the best time to buy a car is at the end of the year? Generally, dealerships offer the biggest discounts in the fall and winter. Your best bets are the “year-end clearance” season and the holiday season, from Thanksgiving to New Year’s day and a little afterwards.

Black Friday

The day after Thanksgiving isn’t just for “big box” store deals (Target, Macy’s, Best Buy, etc.). Car dealers participate in it, too. Click here for some examples of this year’s deals. The promotions are typical and include cash back, $0-down options, etc. You’re likely to find the same options on other days throughout the year, but this one of the best times to save money during the holiday season. Just make sure you give yourself enough time to recover from that Thanksgiving food coma, first. Get quotes online before you start talking to a salesperson.

New Year’s Eve

There are no traditional promotional events at the very end of the year. You can get good deals on New Year’s Eve just because your local dealers will be excited to see you on such a day. The savviest shoppers know that when the dealership is slow, deal-making is easier. Since you have to negotiate to get a great deal anyway, why not do it when the dealership isn’t packed to the gills? It’s an option to consider, if the dealership you want to visit is open on the 31st. Oftentimes, it will be.

Late Summer / Early Fall

OK, so this isn’t really “the holidays” but we needed to mention it because it is a time for big discounts. Right around Labor Day is a good time to look around. It’s when the year-end clearance events start. Basically, what happens is dealers start discounting older models to make room for the new year’s models. The discounts continue for a few months, depending on how well the older models sell and how overstocked, with these older models, the dealerships are.
